Dr. Hussein Yassine: Your Questions Answered About Diet and Brain Health
While Alzheimer’s disease isn’t curable, research shows it may be preventable or postponable by controlling lifestyle factors like diet. Yet, with so many types of diets emerging, it’s hard to know what’s a fad and what lifestyle changes can actually support brain health.
USC’s Dr. Hussein Yassine joins Being Patient live talks to answer questions about how diet affects brain health.
Yassine is an associate professor at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. His research is focused on the intersection of neurology and nutritional sciences. At Yassine Lab, his team studies how lipids - particularly omega-3 fatty acids - affect Alzheimer’s disease. He’s also the director of USC Center for Personaliz...

Eliot joins Being Patient Live Talks to discuss t...

I just learned - yesterday - that my 85 year-old mother’s dementia is Lewy Body Dementia, Moderate. She’s had the classic symptoms for at least 3 years. My daughter (a pediatrician) and I discussed various dementias when the hallucinations about bugs infesting her home became so severe and persistent that my dad no longer could hide them from the rest of the family. Whether she wasn’t diagnosed until recently or my father deliberately hadn’t told us doesn’t matter as much as how quickly we can learn about this disease so that we can really help. I am specifically grateful to you for all the advice about how to respond to the hallucinations. Deep breath.

So, my mom's hallucinations consisted of her bed being on fire and her phone screaming.... How do you respond to that? I would go to her room and get on her bed to show her it wasn't on fire and she'd get even more hysterical. I took the batteries out of her phone and she could still hear it screaming... How do you respond to that?

Thank you for this very informative and inspirational video chat with someone who is now one of my "shero's along with Doreen Monks. I just read the book and wanted to know more about this exceptional person and found Being Patient's interview. So, thank you! I, too, have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last summer after years of prior testing and exploration. As a retired clinical psychologist who specialized in adults and elders having mental health and cognitive problems, I was very aware of dementia and its symptoms, causes, treatments, etc. So I went through a number of neuropsychological tests over many years when first noticing some language difficulties in my late 40's. Although familiar with research and how to find good information in mental health and brain disease, finding local support and a good neurologist has been a challenge. I am inspired by these women and their stories and, especially, their efforts to live as well as they can and to share their knowledge and experiences with others while still able to do so . . . while still being "me.".

Maybe you should just live your life without over worrying. The reason I say this is 20 years ago I was told I had Pick’s disease with a short life expectancy of approximately 1 to 2 years. 14:34 They were wrong. I am talking Penn, not Joe schlock medical clinic. I hate to say this about incompetence but it is a reality. Not all the time or every doctor, but enough to mess your life up . Maybe you should learn to walk if you can’t bike safely and take one day at a time. All the best.

I think my husband has LBD.. his brother had it.. my husband has hand tremor, cognitive fluctuations, REM sleep disorder, has lost his confidence in driving, had one illusion, lost his sense of smell.. He refuses to see a neurologist.. He has been keeping lists for all daily activities, recently he ask who ( when looking at family pics) " Who is that"? about the maid of honor.. Sometimes I cant have a convo with him that makes sense.. about the air conditioner.. he seems " foggy" in areas he was previously very sharp.. like fixing things.. what I can do or say to get him to a neurologist?
